Speed
Speed is the first of a disc's flight numbers and indicates how far the disc is designed to travel with sufficient power. It refers to the potential velocity of a disc when thrown, and essentially measures how fast a disc cuts through the air. Higher speed discs require more power to reach their intended flight path.
However, it's crucial to understand that speed alone doesn't determine distance. While a high-speed disc has the potential to travel further, it requires a strong arm and proper technique to unlock that potential. Factors like glide, wind conditions, and the angle of release significantly influence a disc's actual flight distance. Beginners often find that lower-speed discs, such as mid-ranges and fairway drivers, offer more consistent and predictable flights, allowing them to develop their throwing skills before moving up to higher-speed distance drivers.
